200 episodes to greatness

This week Smallville's 200th episode aired on the CW network. Titled 'Homecoming' the episode saw Clark visit his past, take a closer look at his present and a sneaky look at his future. Focusing on Clark's high school reunion I was hoping to see a few more familiar faces, obviously Chloe and Lana weren't going to make an appearance, but I at least thought that Pete would appear.

Still looking back through classic scenes that have shaped who Clark is at present was well presented, but the most exciting part was seeing Clark meet his future self, the true Clark Kent that we know and love, and Tom Welling proved that he can play this Clark brilliantly. Sadly I have been unable to find a picture of this but I did find this video:

What this episode reminded me is all the things that Clark has learnt along the way and how we have been there to experience them with him, from learning he can lift heavy things to getting x-ray vision, it has been an epic journey and I can't wait to see how it ends.

Bring on the classics

Left: Lois & Clark's man eater Cat Grant, Right: Smallville's innocent version

Smallville's final season may only be two episodes in, but it is already promising to be the epic send off to a decade look at the early years of a comic book great. Episode two brought us Cat Grant, and a very different Cat Grant from the one portrayed in Lois & Clark - The New Adventures of Superman. Looking at all of the female characters that have appeared alongside Clark in the past ten years this Cat work perfectly, rather than throwing in a character that is going to chase down Clark until she gets her man, we are seeing someone who is just looking out for her family and using her work to deliver her message to the masses.

But next week's episode sees the return of one of the greatest characters in the Superman story, that of his cousin Kara, aka Supergirl. This will be an interesting episode so early on in this season, as Laura Vandervoort revealed that she teaches Clark something he cannot do yet. And we all know what that one thing Kara can do that Clark can't is...

Going back to episode two briefly we also saw a new look for Clark as the blur, a brilliant red leather jacket, moving Clark one step closer to the famous suit Jor-El currently has locked away at the Fortress of Solitude.

And so the end begins

When I first read in one of my sci-fi magazines 10 years ago that a TV series about Superman's early years I thought that would be an interesting concept for a show. Little did I know that it would shape my love for all things Superman and my passion for sci-fi grow. Why do I love Smallville? It's not just the storylines and characters, but the little details from how they use colours, what Clark wears (he started in red/blue flannel shirts, wearing white when he lost his powers and black when he became 'bad Clark', slowly moving into solid red or blue t-shirts with a blue or red jacket) and of course the amazing special effects.

This week the final ever season premiere of Smallville aired, marking the start of the end. And what a brillaint start it was, if you refer to my review of the season nine finale you will recall I was excited by the glimpse of the Superman costume through Clark's eye, well in this episode you actually see it for yourself. If you've seen Superman Returns then you will have seen a very similar costume. This episode also saw a return from Jonathan Kent and Lex Luthor (but not Michael Rosenbaum).

I can't wait to see every episode of this season leading up to the epic finale when, I hope and expect Clark Kent to wear the suit and fly off to become the infamous Superman we all know and love.

The Smallville Countdown begins

Only a week to go until the epic final season of Smallville returns to the small screen in the US (sadly here in the UK season nine hasn't even finished yet!). I love this promo which, although it doesn't give much away about the next season, it does show memories from the last nine seasons and a 'blink and you'll miss it' sneak peek at the Superman uniform.

From Superhero to Cheerleaders

Tom Welling is already preparing to hang up his cape as Clark Kent (Not that we've seen him wear it yet) by producing new CW Network show Hellcats. I have to say I expected your typical cheerleading drama, but I was pleasently surprised.

Firstly it focuses around colleague students rather than high schoolers, and the 'bitch fight' at the start between the head cheerleader and indie chick does not follow the preticability of them becoming arch enemies. I'm not sure however if Ashley Tisdale's character will get annoying

It won't fill the void that Smallville will leave at the end of this epic final season, but for a seaon pilot I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to the next episode.
